Inspired by the pelican as a symbol of motherly self-sacrificing, this monologue examines motherhood and femininity. Based on the myth that pelican mothers pick their breast feathers to feed their children with blood, the notion explores unconditional love, animal instinct and an inherent expectation of prioritizing care to themselves. The show reflects on the tension between giving and being emptied, and between protection and longing. The pelican becomes a figure of duality: both mother and child, the one who gives, and the one who longs to be held. Ecker-Scharling is a group of actor Idun Ecker and costume designer Anne Scarling Toft. Both have studied at KHiO, where Anne has taken a bachelor in dress and costume design, and Idun completed her bachelor in acting this year. For years they have collaborated across the subjects, writing and developing small performances. Now they invite the public into an intimate room that care is not idealized, but exposed as a complex and often painful necessity.
