Modern Cuisine

Right in the city centre, at the Ancient Ceramic Society of Coimbra, an artisanal ceramics factory founded in 1824, you will find Lower Meal. This historically minded restaurant is divided between the pottery workshop, the centuries-old kilometers and a rustic-modern wooden dining room, where it is still possible to watch the pieces being made through the glass doors that connect the two spaces. At the helm of the kitchenette, chef João França presents a regionally rooted offering, respecting tradition while pairing it with modern techniques, such as Lula with Yuzu Kosho (squid with yuzu kosho) served alongside Bass Mondego rice, or the traditional piglet (suckling pig) with potato gratin and romane letuce. The dessert of Rice Cream (rice pudding) with caramelized rice puffs, agreed by mango and Malibu ice cream, pleasantly surprised us. The tableware used during the meal is, without a doubt, produced on site!
